We do not
talk about that on front pages pf newspapers or anywhere else.
Shell has
been extracted oil from the Niger delta in Nigeria for decades, which is not
the crime. The crime is, it creates hundreds of oil spills a year.
Amnesty
reports, it has gone on for decades. By now 42,000 residents are effected.
Their drinking water, cooking water, grown food and fishes are all so badly
polluted. They decided to take it to court.
The High Court
in the UK is now deciding whether the people in Nigeria will have a case
against Shell UK Ltd to be heard in Britain.
If the
people win their case; it would also bring in other transnational firms based
in Britain for Human Rights abuse overseas.
The Shell’s
Nigeria subsidiary, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) argues the case
is outside British jurisdiction.
The
community affected by oil pollution, will certainly have a fight on their hands
taking on the mighty Shell.
Two
separate legal action have been brought against Shell by 42,000 people from the
OGALE and BILLE community in the Niger Delta in Nigeria south Niger State who
are affect by constant oil spills. Their environment and livelihoods had been
destroyed.
The
pollution of food growing on their land and eating poisoned fish resulted in
breathing problems and skin lesions.
This is
going on since1958 when Nigeria was a British colony.
But Sarah
Shoraka, a global oil and environment campaign group Platform London, argues “Shell
is a UK company and must held to account for its human rights abuses in the UK
courts.”
