SNP Mhairi Black, 20, became MP for the constituency
of Renfrewshire South in the last General Election in May 2015.
She gave her Maiden Speech only now because she is
still studying at the University of Glasgow, reading politics, and wanted that
to be finished first. She also gave herself time to listen to other speeches
from various parties.
Ms Black raised many good points in her speech which
was fully reported in the Guardian.
She pointed out that she is the only 20 year old who
receives housing benefit from the Chancellor George Osborne since he axed
housing benefit for under 21 in his last budget. Ms Black criticised the
Conservative Party very heavily for cancelling the housing benefit. She found
it ridiculous that she alone, in the UK, will be entitled to because being a MP
and has to have a second home in London
The remark caused laughter across the House of
Common.
She made a point that she does not rub salt into the
wounds of Labour for having lost the seats in Scotland to the SNP and with it
the General Election but she would asked Labour and other parties for joining
them for a good opposition.
Mhairi Black said: “I would reach out a genuine hand
of friendship that I can only hope will be taken. Let us come together. Let us
be the opposition. Ultimately people are in need of a voice, people need help.
Let’s give them it.”
Ms Black received a great applause and apparently it
is not in the rules to applause a speaker. The MPs were reprimanded but the speech was so
tremendous with a real fresh outlook therefore the MPs could not stop
themselves to show their enthusiasm.
She also did not spare on words to explain why
Labour lost so heavily to SNP. She told
them that people were angry and felt that Labour lost touch with the people in
Scotland.
Mhairi Black has the entire right attitude and put
it into words which reach people.
Her constituency was run by LibDem Douglas Alexander and is
one of the poorest.
Will she be able to turn it around? After all in the House
of Common exists a political war and most of the MPs are only interested to
rise and bring others down. They are not interested in people to get a better life and it comes through many times in her speech.
Especially now with Tory’s budget of £12billion
Welfare cuts being forced through.
Personally I wish her al the luck and success. Ms
Black has certainly the right attitude which was need for a long time.
The Labour Party were praising her speech greatly today. which is a very good sign.
